Newsflash: we need to keep our $#!% together

A calm nervous system is a happy nervous system.

There’s been a lot of funky energy flyin’ around the world lately so I’m here today to offer some perspective and maybe even some solutions on how to handle the collective chaos of the world.

I don’t want to get too controversial (or do I!), but I think most of us need to pay less attention to what’s going on outside of ourselves and start focusing more on what we can control: ourselves.

It’s 2024 and it’s getting increasingly easy to get caught up in energy that isn’t ours. That makes it tricky to maintain an objective view about the things we can and can’t change.

So to kick us off today I have to share my favourite flowchart of all time:

Yes. It really is that simple. Print it. Put it on your fridge. Tattoo it to your face….

Now let’s get into it.

stop being so social

First things first, if your eyes and ears have been glued to social media (especially lately) please do yourself and your nervous system a favour and take a damn break!

I’ve come to realize that a lot of people either aren’t aware (or don’t care) that the social media companies use the almighty algorithm to purposely keep us stuck on the screen. And most of the time the strategy is to get us fired up. Why? This keeps you on their apps.

Sadly, getting people triggered is now a profitable business – if we stay enraged and engaged, those social media moguls get to serve us more ads and therefore make more moula.

If you spend too much time scrolling through the hot topics and diving into the comment section warzone, you’ll constantly be fed information (true and false) to create anger and fear, because those are the extremely powerful emotions used in order to f!@# up people’s nervous systems and maintain power over your consciousness.

Not only that, but we are way beyond the point of being able to trust and believe everything we see. Of course there’s lots of legit content out there, but let’s be real: we’ve all seen the power of video editing and Photoshop and we now we’re getting acquainted with the wildly realistic power of Artificial Intelligence. We’re living in a world of “deep fakes” and “bots” and all kinds of crazy $#!%. What a time to be alive!

My suggestion? If you’re going to stick to screen time, retrain your algorithm! Follow accounts with good news and videos of ducks riding donkeys or figure skaters falling. Spend more time purposely finding and focusing on content that feeds your soul instead of feeding into the collective chaotic frenzy. This will inform the algorithm that you’re willing to spend more time on the social apps if things are fun and positive. If you’re gonna use social media, don’t let social media use you.

no news is good news

I remember an old joke from an Ellen DeGeneres stand-up special where she impersonates a modern news anchor:

“It could be the most deadly thing in the world and you may be having it for dinner. We’ll tell you what it is… tonight at 11:00”.

Then Ellen imitates the viewer, “……is it peas!?!?” Hilarious but true.

I’ve got some good news and some bad news for you. The bad news is: TV news has turned into a fear-mongering, ratings-focused, $#!% show . The good news is: you can turn that shit off. Trust me, as a fully recovered News-aholic, I can speak from experience that no news is good news.

When I lived in California, I went through a very intense period of news addiction. After the 2016 election, I spent around 4-5 hours a day watching most of the major news channels… for 4 years. I think we can all agree that’s too much.

Sometimes it’s important to be in the know about what’s going on in the world… but I’m going to be brutally honest and say: most of the time you’ve got to shut that $#!% down.

There’s this insane misconception that if you don’t know about the suffering or drama of the world that you don’t care or you’re a bad person or you’re “spiritual bypassing”… what a steaming load of bull.

Here’s a truth bomb for you: paying attention to current events doesn’t make you smarter or better… it just means your brain and nervous system are holding onto whatever meticulously curated angle of information the news Gods wanted you to be exposed to that day.

Think about it: everything that you see or hear that you cannot control is nothing but a burden on your nervous system.

If you need it, there are many ways to get news without it being accompanied by intense music and anxiety-inducing colors (ever notice that “BREAKING NEWS” is always in bold red scary letters?)

Do yourself a favour: protect your heart and your nervous system. Don’t maintain constant exposure to the news cycle. Nobody needs to know what’s happening 24/7. Unless it is directly in front of you, you cannot change the outcome so you’re only causing yourself unnecessary stress. Take care of yourself!

it starts with us

We may not be able to affect major events from our specific place in the world, but we can make sure that we are solid, focused and heart-centered.

If you want to post, post. If you want to march, march. If you need to scream, scream. But also know that another option is to go inward and realign yourself. We can and should be in full awareness and control of our energy when putting things out into the world, otherwise we just become a part of the problem.

Rest assured, as a collective we’ve gotten through some pretty $#!%ty times (remember that super fun pandemic we had??) so you best believe that no matter what comes our way, we can get through it if we stick together. We’re not always going to agree or align with every other human on the planet, but if we’re going to complain that the world is full of @$$holes, it doesn’t help anything if we get so bent out of shape that we become @$$holes ourselves. I believe that’s called hypocrisy…and it’s just silly.

This is why we created Vortex. We truly believe that if everyone takes care of themselves on a consistent basis, we’ll feel better, do better and be better. Then those good vibes ripple out from your field and positively affect the community around you… and eventually the world at large.

So let’s do our best to create a world full of people with calm nervous systems who are aligned with self love and know how to keep their $#!% together.

It starts with us.
