showing up: the practice of being yourself

Let's dive into some deep introspection, shall we?

Oh, good afternoon, fellow human. December is a big, fun month for us – not just because the studio gets busier, but Steve and I are both celebrating birthdays in the coming days – I’m December 3rd and he’s the 6th. That’s right – two wild and crazy Saggittarians are running the show here.

As I approach my 39th year on this planet, I’ve been thinking a lot lately about who I am and who I want to be. And that’s lead me to ponder how I’m currently showing up in my life, and how I want to show up. Let’s discuss…

showing up as yourself, for yourself

What does it mean to show up? To me, it means stepping into every space as your true, authentic self; to arrive in the moment with your walls down and heart open to be the real you. Too cheesy? Let me put it this way: it means you stop bullshitting the world and being selective with the parts of yourself that you share.

When you put it like that, it sounds f!@#in’ terrifying doesn’t it?

It might come as a surprise since I’m pretty honest in these little midday musings, but I’ve always struggled with being myself fully. I’m pretty much an open book, but there are a lot of chapters I don’t let people read. But I’m prepping myself for a new phase where I’m ramping up the authenticity. Why? Because my life is great and I think it could be even better if I stop holding back the parts of myself that I’ve been too afraid to share.

Why do we hide parts of ourselves? A big reason is that we’re scared people will judge us, make fun of us, disown us, hate us – the list goes on. It doesn’t feel good to be judged or ridiculed, but it feels even worse to be stuck in a world where we hold back who we are.

One of my friends and mentors, Christie-Lynn Hicks owned a very successful yoga studio in Burbank, California where I did my yoga teacher training a million years ago. Before we opened Vortex, Christie gave Steve and I some of the best advice I’ve ever heard:

Be so authentically yourself that you repel those who don’t align with you.

Woah. Let that sink in!

This applies to business, but even more so as people. We spend so much time trying to be everything for other people, but how real are we being with ourselves and for ourselves on a day-to-day basis?

Do we really want to change or hide parts of ourselves to impress people who don’t love and accept us for who we truly are? Where are we holding back in our lives because of fear of what others will think? Or how our lives and relationships might change if we actually own the fullness of who we are?

I’ve learned that the more courageous you are with being yourself in every facet of your life, you will notice people start to shift away from being recurring characters in the TV show that is your life – and that’s a good sign. Sure, sometimes it’s painful for relationships to evolve, but you end up with a smaller, but tighter circle of people who not only accept you for who you are, but celebrate it!

All of this has been on my mind lately, which is exactly why we’re doing an event this month on exactly this topic…

intention + intuition

In September we hosted an incredible sold out event with international best-selling Hay House author Chris-Anne called “An Evening of Intuition and Tarot”. We had lots of requests for more events like this, so here we are! Only this time – Chris-Anne will be joined by Daniel James (wait… that’s me!) for Intention + Intuition: Showing Up For Your Vision.

If you’ve been feeling called to really step into the bigness of who you are and what you have to offer the world, then this event is for you.

On December 21st (yea, the winter solstice, baby!) Vortex will host an evening of mindfulness, music and magic.

We’ll provide the prompts and the perspective to help you get clear on how you want to show up in your life, dive into some simple meditative practices to strengthen the connection, tap into tarot as a tool for personal guidance, and solidify the good vibes with a lil’ bit of live, original music by yours truly.

Can you think of a better way to launch yourself into 2024?

Get clear on your vision.

Fuel your intention for the next year.

Access your intuition with tarot & oracle decks.

This intimate event is capped at 18 heart-centered humans who want to strengthen the connection to themselves and are ready (or want to be ready!) to step into their vision for the future.
